Often, spelling games follow a similar structure to Scrabble and when they don’t, it’s a rare treat. Letter Quest: Grimm’s Journey is a rare treat.

Letter Quest: Grimm’s Journey presents an action title with your actions linked to spelling. Take control of Grimm and deal damage to monsters by creating words from the letters placed on the bottom of the screen. This isn’t the first game to use this mechanic, but it’s one of the first to use this very polished spelling mechanic.

Each round you’ll face off against a monster or two and need to attack them by spelling different words. Most of the time, time isn’t an issue so you can sit back and think about forming the best one possible. Longer words will have a stronger attack. But changing this up is that the monster, besides fighting back, will alter the letters below. Sometimes letters will turn into stone and be unusable and other times the letters will swap to a different letter. The great thing though is that this can work in your favor by giving you a better letter. The variety of game mechanics makes this one heck of a fun game.

Even though Letter Quest: Grimm’s Journey is a very short game, it doesn’t matter since it offers amazing fun. I encourage you to try out new tactics as you go along as well as purchase upgrades. Sure it’s short, but man is it fun!

The Bottom Line: I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun playing a word game.
