Back in the day I used to run 15 miles a few times a week  through the cold, brisk streets of Boston with my trusty minidisk player blasting music in my head. How times have changed…I’m lucky to hit the six mile mark and my outdated (vintage) minidisk player (man that thing was so cool when it first came out) has long since been replaced with an iPhone. But lo and behold! But unlike my minidisk running past, my running sessions are so much more fun with apps like Marx Runner.

Marx Runner is made up of two different motivational tools to help you push yourself further. First, it keeps track of your running stats and the second takes a new approach to music which I’ll get to later. If you’re like me, I’m completely motivated by numbers. What I mean by that is how far can I run, how long is my running session, and how fast can I jog a mile. Marx Runner keeps track of all of this.

My wife on the other hand, couldn’t care less  about ”numbers” or “stats” and instead enjoys being motivated by her surroundings as well as music. If you’re music driven, and I think we all are to some extent, Mark Runner also includes a really cool feature that allows you to adjust original music that’s included in the app to your own pacing, or have the music adapt to your pacing (by using the GPS tracking feature). You can also cycle thru an assortment of original songs, as well as turn off certain instrument tracks (I.E. drums or vocals). While this feature is great and can really motivate you, the only downside is that it doesn’t allow you to import your own music and adjust BPM or anything else of that nature.

The Bottom Line: 8.5/10 (Great)

If you need an extra motivational push and like cool apps, Marx Runner is a great choice for you with its chunk of features and a steal at only a buck.
