Gamevil games are addictive and usually manage to swallow up my free time. In our “Attack of the Freemiums” article, Fishing Super Star was the highest recommended game on the list. Once again we step into another Gamevil Freemium game, Kingdom Royale.

Kingdom Royale’ approach is a Kingdom building sim that requires you to build resources,an army and upgrade your castle defenses among other things. In other words, there’s a lot to stay on top of management wise which in this case is a good thing.

Where maintaing a steady flow of income and resources is one thing, the other portion of Kingdom Royale is the battling system that has much more depth to it than most freemium titles. Strategizing your battles is akin to a game of Rocks-Paper-Scissors but in this case it’s Humans-Orcs-Elves. You will know the hand that’s going to be played but you never necessarily know how the hand is going to play out (trust me this will make more sense when you try it out for yourself). On top of this there’s a few other elements such as battling class and potions that adds complexity so if you’re a strategy vet you’ll find entertainment here…and if you’re new to this type of game, you’ll grasp it after a few battles.

Until now I’ve only had praise for Kingdom Royale but here comes the but portion. This time around Kingdom Royale creates its own but by destroying itself with the relentless push of IAP. Nah, it doesn’t say you have to purchase it but expect the pacing to come to a complete stop (or so it seems) if you don’t throw down some cash. If a soldier dies in battle, and more likely than not he or she will, they’re gone forever unless you make it rain some cash to revive them. If you revive your soldiers you can easily expect to spend a few bucks each day. Next, while I don’t mind the enemy taking over some of my territory, it happens way too fast (like say good bye to territories when you wake up). Now what you accomplished the day before has to be done all over. Now that you’ve redone the work make sure you don’t go to sleep…or you’ll have to do it again! Ever hear the saying “treading water”? that’s what Kingdom Royale comes down to.

The Bottom Line: 5.5/10 (Mediocre)

Kingdom Royale is an amazing Kingdom sim that’s destroyed by it’s own IAP. With that said, Kingdom Royale is free so if you’re slightly interested, give it a shot. Just don’t be shocked when you come to a complete stop…unless you throw down an endless amount of cash.
