When I see a Freemium app in the back of my mind is the thought that I could simply Cut ‘n Paste a past written Freemium review, change a few words here and there…but I don’t. In the case of My Singing Monsters don’t let the freemium jade your thinking into a “been there done that”. My Singing Monsters brings a new layer of cuteness with a touch of music.
The day is fast approaching when we’ll need to change describing conception through the birds & the bees and the flowers and the trees to the test tube and the test tube…and more test tubes! Wow I went there and I have some confused people. You see My Singing Monsters is a breeding app that has you breed a monster and another monster. Now take these two monsters and combine them in a tree test-tube like device and watch them create a new monster egg (is it only me or are there going to be some really confused kids when they grow up). Hatch the egg and now you’ve created a new breed of monster.
Incubating monsters, placing them in the world, feeding them, as well as making them happy is all by the book and nothing new here. However, what is new here is that they are musical monsters and each one adds a new layer to the song that makes up the monsters world. Add a yeti-like monster and it’ll add some vocals to the song or add a stone shaped minster and you’ve not got some percussion happening. Want a instrument to increase in volume? Add multiple same-type monsters and that instrument will increase in volume accordingly. It gets even cooler when you level up enough where you can adjust the tempo!
On the musical side of things, My Singing Monsters actually plays out as a nice understanding tool of how songs can be layered with tracks (or not…but I won’t break out my nerdy music degree and get all uppity). I applaud the animation and character designs. Each of the monsters include a physical musical attribute that is shared through visual and sound. This alone had me progressing through my monster breeding career to see what monster I would create next. Topping it off is the animation. My goodness the animation has so much detail that my only concern is that people may overlook some things. Watch a monster’s lips buzz when humming or the fingers of the stone monster. All very col and completely in sync with the tracks! OMG! If you’re not a freemium type of person I still recommend that you at least watch the “Behind the Scenes” trailer to see how cool My Singing Monsters is.
The Bottom Line: 8.5/10 (Great)
Even though My Singing Monsters falls short on pace and missions that are more bland than Irish food, the creativity of layering monsters and the animation is what makes this worth your time.
