“Go For It! Connect Four!” is what comes to mind whenever I encounter a connect four game that has you trying to outwit your opponent while at the same time making sure that the opponent doesn’t do the same to you. It’s this psychological gameplay that still makes this simple concept interesting. We’ve seen inspiration of this formula in other iOS games in the past but none have taken it to the next level as much as 4 In A 3D Row.
4 In A 3D Row plays by the exact rules as Milton Bradley’s Connect Four but changes up the playing field. Say good bye to the 6×8 rows and say ‘hello’ to the new board layout of 4x4x4. Now your connect four game is in a 3D world that has you connect either on a single level, straight down, and even diagonally across each of the layers. This is easily done by rotating the board and tapping on a location to place your piece. Best of all is that this UI works so well that I’ve never had a mis-tap!
4 In A 3D Row allows you to play either against the AI or another opponent. Thankfully there are difficulty options with the AI because it will take you a few games to wrap your brain around this new concept. Once it connects you’ll wish that you had this when you were growing up (well this is if you’re one of my older readers). Once you get your feet wet there’s also multiplayer that allows you to play against friends or a random opponent.
The Bottom Line: 8.5/10 (Great)
4 In A 3D Row brilliantly brings Connect Four into a 3D playing field.
