Although I’ve never been a bee nor do I have any bee friends, I assume that two of the biggest tragedies for any bee is fire and bears. The bee kingdom Funky Bee Castle, in Funky Bee has already survived one fire that happened hundreds of years ago and now once again this magical kingdom is facing yet another threat…lions, tigers, and bears oh my! Well…only bears this time.
When you first enter the kingdom you’ll be introduced to some of the castle’s residents as well as receive your first mission. The first mission clearly outlines what’s to be expected throughout the rest of your experience. This is basically a point-and-click-like adventure with each quest containing one out of many mini-games that needs to be solved in order for (most) of your given quests to be completed. Once you start completing quests you’ll start to open up the game’s storyline: unravel how the bears are finding there way into the catacombs and to stop them. Old school gamers like myself will feel right at home with this style of gameplay as well as being accustomed to a story that unfolds a tad slower than most games today (this is not a bad thing).
Generally the mini-games that make up Funky Bee are well done and contain a bit more thought than other games found in this adventure genre. One quick example is having to place puzzle pieces in the correct spot but you’ll also have to rotate each piece as well. While this rotating portion may sound basic, strangely enough most iOS adventure games puzzles (that I’ve played) are more basic which in the end creates a less-fulfilling experience.
The games’ appeal isn’t just puzzles, the quirky characters and large kingdom are decently drawn (not great-but not bad) and enough to perk my interest to see what room or character I would encounter next. Regrettably the same can’t be said for the menus and the appearance of the dialog that could easily be mistaken for a SNES title.
The Bottom Line: 7/10 (Good)
You will have a fresh adventure throughout Funky Bee with all the varieties of mini-games found in each quest.
