Shrek’s Fairytale Kingdom follows the Freemium model to a tee. You’ll build a land, in this case it’s Shrek’s swamp (and more…but more on this in a bit), where you’ll place mud baths for him and other Shrek-like things. Over time parts of the swamp that you have placed will reward you will cash and you’ll be able to purchase some more stuff. By the book so far right (the Freemium book…not a fairy take book)? Yup.
In Shrek’s Fairytale Kingdom, everything is polished from the graphics to the pacing of the game. Yes, you can actually progress at a decent rate without ever spending a penny! How Shrek’s Fairytale Kingdom approaches the pacing is rather compelling. Remember how I said that you’ll be building up Shrek’s swamp? Well you’ll also be building up Lord Farquaad’s Kindom and Fiona’s castle tower (where she’s being kept locked up), as well as a couple of other places all at the same time. But that’s not all, you can send a handful of the main characters off on missions which means that if you want you can for the most part play this non stop. Believe me this is pretty rare for a Freemium game.
The Bottom Line: 8/10 (Great)
Where Shrek’s Fairytale Kingdom is by-the-book as can be (pretty much why this review is so short!), it packs in a fantastic pace along with great visuals. If you’ve been burned by Freemium in the past don’t fret, this one is a gem.
