I know that many of you are big poker fans and probably play online poker to some extent.  The real downside to being a fan of online poker is that there really haven’t been any “good” options for playing online poker for the iPhone.   However, that has changed with the bwin poker app.

Before we review the app, I should point out that this is not another “free play” poker app like Zynga.  With the bwin poker app, you can actually play real money online poker straight from your iPhone. Granted, you must live in a county where it is legal for you to play online poker.  Sorry to our American friends out there.

How the app works is that once you have downloaded it, you will login and go to the lobby where you will be greeted with an interface very similar to bwin’s PC client.  There you can choose what type of Hold’em game you want, you level of stakes, and what size table you want to play at.

There are a few catches to this app.  First, the bwin poker app only allows you to play cash games.  Tournament poker is not currently offered.  Also, you do not have the option of selecting what table you would like to play at.  You are placed at random at a table for the level of stakes you request.  For many of you that will probably not be a concern, but more serious poker players like to be more selective of their tables.

The design of this app is good with OK graphics like you would expect from bwin and the controls are very user friendly.  You aren’t going to get all the bells and whistles you would expect of the PC client, but it will serve nicely for those wanting a quick online poker fix.

As I understand it, bwin has always been one of the first online poker companies to test the waters in new technology.  They were the first to offer a Mac poker client, the first to offer a mobile client, and now they are the first to offer a iPhone app.  Hopefully we will see tournaments and other game options added in future release, but for now, this is a great start.
