Alright, so what’s Nihilumbra all about? In Nihilumbra, you’re Born, a black blob that escapes from the world of nothingness. During this escape you adventure through the world of Nihilumbra and learn things about the surrounding world. You’ll primarily use colors to aid you in your escape. To use a color draw a line on any object (unless the object is plagued with the nothingness) to place the color. The colors all bring different attributes from being ice-like, fire, bouncy….
It’s this use of color that fleshes out the puzzles that are in your way. In order to get rid of a pesky enemy, you might want to put ice below their feet and watch them slide into a pit. Perhaps a crate is in the way and the only way to solve the puzzle is by placing a fire underneath it. While these puzzle concepts sound simplistic in nature, it’s when you need to use an assortment of colors at once that makes Nihilumbra so exciting.
The puzzles do grow in complexity and will challenge a lot of gamers. However, if you’re a puzzle freak like myself, you won’t get that stumped. Nonetheless, Nihilumbra packs in a lot of gameplay and the puzzles remain interesting for all puzzle enthusiasts.
Nihilumbras’ beautiful art style will entice you through the game and it’s approach to level design is one of the most creative of the puzzle-platformers.
The Bottom Line: 9.5/10 (Super!)
Nihilumbra creates one of the most memorable iOS puzzle-platformers that we’ve seen as of yet.
