One of the genres that fit perfectly on any iOS device are the time-trial platform racers. Fans just can’t get enough. Luckily we come across a great one every now and then. It’s time! Let’s rev up our iPhones and blast through crazy loop de loop courses in Ubisoft’s MotoHeroz.

Like most time-trial platform racers (man that’s a mouthful), MotoHeroz pits you against a track where you have to avoid hazards and aim your jumps to finish each course. However, completing the course isn’t good enough, instead you’ll have to push yourself to the limits and cross the finish line (well there’s actually no finish line…instead you ram into a finish ball) within a time limit.

When you finish a level and beat a time limit you’ll be rewarded a star along with a chunk of cash to pimp your ride. Choosing to beef up your acceleration or top speed is always a good option that’ll allow you to tackle the level once again. This is the time to think things through, perhaps a faster vehicle that can circumvent some obstacles while accessing other parts of a course will help you achieve a better time. If you’re fast enough, and you’ll really have to soup up your vehicle for this, you can obtain a 3-star rating for each level which‘ll allow you to open up some of the later stages.

The issue with upgrading your ride is that it takes a long time. Like I have no idea how many times I replayed each level. This is because the upgrades take a huge chunk out of your bank account and earning enough cash will seem to take forever. The guilty party behind this is notorious IAP.

This stupid IAP concept takes away from the balance of the gameplay and puts you in a gaming headlock that either requires that you play for countless hours to progress or give away your lunch money. So while it’s nice that you don’t have to spend IAP to advance, I would rather spend a couple bucks up front on MotoHeroz and receive balanced gameplay with a solid, fun racing experience.

The Bottom Line: 8.5

MotoHeroz is a great platform racer that’s accompanied with precise physics and bright graphics. Unfortunately the downside is that it falls on the tedious side due to the time it takes to upgrade your vehicle.
