I’ve always loved flight combat games and sims, you could even trace my love for virtual flight back to the old 2D flight shooters. To this day I try and get my hands on every X-Plane Sim (on both iOSand OSX) as well as the more arcadey flight apps such as Namco’s Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy.
If you’re a Flight Sim purist and cringe at the thought of anything arcadey then Sky Gamblers is clearly not for you. However, if you love arcade flyers then you’ll be greeted with fantastic well thought out controls with the minimalistic approach (compared to Sims), along with visually impressive landscapes to fly over. Best of all is that depending on your level of flight skills, Sky Gamblers includes a few different options to either make the controls a tad easier to grasp (even more minimalistic) or if you’re advanced, the controls can be tweaked to give you a bit more control.
The single player campaign for Sky Gamblers, while leaning on the short side, brings you to several locations along with various missions and objectives such as dogfights, cannon runs, and defending or destroying bases. Helping to pad the single player experience are a few different modes that are more enjoyable than the actual campaign. The modes consist of dogfights, free for all, capture the flag (along with a few more) with each one allowing you to tweak the difficulty curve along with the length of each game. This is a single player experience that’ll keep you flying for hours.
If you’ve never played any flight combat game than let me tell you where all the funs at–multiplayer. Let me assure you that this rings true with Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy. Either jumping or creating a multiplayer game (includes all the extra modes found in single player minus the campaign) is easy and will have you playing online in moments. If you’re new to this genre you will die often, but chin up you’ll encounter other newbies that’ll help curve the experience. My advice is to get some experience in single player then once you get a hang of it jump into multiplayer. You will become addicted.
The Bottom Line:
If you have “The New iPad” then this is a great showcase game. If you’re addicted to flight combat games or looking to experience them for the first time then Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy will fit your gaming needs.
