I always like to reminisce while playing boardgame inspired games on my iOS device. I don’t know if it was the simplicity or the innocence of these games. So after learning about a Connect Four ( “Go for it! Connect Four!”) inspired game, Luminati HD, I had to give it a try.
At first glance, Luminati HD appears to be a standard connect four game with great visuals. Each player is represented by a mystical beast with matching coins. Accompanying the graphics and sound effects is a nice soundtrack (Purchase Soundtrack Here). However no matter how good a game looks visually, it’s the gameplay that counts. And yes, like the presentation, the gameplay holds up rather well.
Luminati HD plays identical to Connect Four. Each player takes turns dropping a coin down a column trying to connect four in any direction while blocking the attempts of the opposing player. But with Luminati HD there’s something else to consider–there are magical coin power-ups to collect. Ah, there’s the rub. These special coins can destroy a row of coins horizontally or vertically. This new game wrench completely kicks your game strategy to the curb when they appear. Many times I would have to consider “do I want to place a coin in a critical position, risking that the other player may collect the power-up” or “should I grab the special coin”. This one little rule change completely makes Luminati HD a much more in-depth strategy game than other Connect Four games.
For a free game, Luminati HD includes a lot more than expected. There’s a decent single player experience that offers growing AI with each successful match, then there’s the ability to play with friends (or strangers). To do this you can either play on a single device and pass it back and forth (great for traveling) or if you’re connected online, you can play against any Game Center friend.
The Bottom Line:
Luminati HD brings you a fun Connect Four experience with a small gameplay twist. Best of all you can play it for free!
