We’ve all played Angry Birds, even your parents who don’t even know how to play the messages on their cassette answering machine, even possibly Elvis and Sasquatch have gotten their hands on it. Angry Birds was not the first of its kind and we’ve played our variations that involve throwing monkey poo, to launching GMO veggies…now we’re aiming arrows and cannon balls towards trolls in eMobiSoft Inc.’s Troll Blaster!
Before you get your panties in a twist saying how much you hate cloned games, while Troll Blaster shares similarities with Angry Birds, but Troll Blaster approaches each of its stages differently. Sure the goal of each level is to destroy the forts in order to target the trolls, sounds all to similar right? As far as this goes yes, however unlike ill-tempered slingshot fowl, Troll Blaster places a heavy emphasis on puzzle quality.
Each level in Troll Blaster gives you a limited supply of ammo and figuring out the actual order along with how it should be used brings out different challenges in their own right. Each weapon (arrow, cannon ball, explosive cannon ball, and bazooka) has its own strength that needs to be used correctly in each level in order to succeed. The thing is, it’s as much puzzle game as it is a projectile destruction game, so you can’t waste any ammo (each ammo is basically a piece of the puzzle)–and if your aim is a little off with a puzzle piece shot…redo time.
Troll Blaster is challenging! Man is it challenging…like good luck with the later levels challenging. Luckily (or unlucky depending on how you see it) failure is all on your shoulders. You’re given everything to succeed along with the responsiveness and for the most part great controls. Knowing where you’re aiming along with the amount of power is well represented which in the end will cut down most of the frustration of failing. So–no excuses, if you failed a level it’s your issue, not the games fault. Tough love. Go practice your puzzle solving and aiming, you’ll need it.
The Bottom Line:
Troll Blaster brings a challenging freshness that is normally absent in this genre.
